What Seed Bead Sizes Actually Mean
Seed bead sizes use the "aught" system: a number followed by /0, where a higher number means a smaller bead. A 15/0 seed bead is tiny — about 1.5 mm across — while a 6/0 is a chunky 4 mm. The explanation you'll see repeated most often is that the number once counted how many beads it took to fill a fixed unit of length, so a bigger number meant a smaller bead; sources disagree on the details, and it doesn't change the practical rule. 15/0 is the smallest size most beaders use, 11/0 is the everyday standard, 8/0 is the comfortable middle, and 6/0 is the largest size in common everyday use. Larger seed beads do exist and are sold under the same name — Czech ranges run to 5/0 and beyond, and Toho makes 3/0 and 1/0 rounds — but you'll meet them far less often than the four sizes above.

One note on reading that third column: strung length is set by the bead's height along the hole axis, not by the diameter in the column beside it. Round seed beads are wider than they are tall — height runs roughly two-thirds of the diameter — so the beads-per-inch figures are higher than dividing 25.4 mm by the listed diameter would suggest.
Two things worth noticing in the chart itself:
- The jumps are not even. Stepping from 15/0 to 11/0 adds only about half a millimeter, but 11/0 to 8/0 adds a full millimeter, and 8/0 to 6/0 another. Moving up one "size" at the coarse end changes far more than moving up one at the fine end.
- Beads per gram falls off a cliff. A single gram of 15/0s holds roughly 250 beads, while a gram of 6/0s holds about 15. This is why tiny beads feel like a bargain per tube and large beads disappear fast.

15/0 — Detail Work and Embellishment
At roughly 1.5 mm, 15/0s are the smallest size in wide everyday use. They shine in bead embroidery edging, picot trims, fringe tips, and anywhere you need fine detail — think of them as the pixels of beadwork. The tradeoff is small holes: plan on thin needles (size 12 or finer) and be careful with multiple thread passes, because the hole fills up quickly. They are not a beginner's first bead, but they are indispensable once your tension is steady.
11/0 — The Everyday Standard
If seed beads have a default, it is 11/0. At about 2 mm, this size dominates beadweaving patterns, loom work, and fine stringing. Most published patterns assume 11/0 unless they say otherwise. Holes accommodate several passes of standard beading thread, colors and finishes are available in the widest range of any size, and the scale is fine enough for detail without demanding magnification. When in doubt, buy 11/0.
8/0 — The Comfortable Middle
At about 3 mm, 8/0s are big enough to see clearly, grab easily, and thread without squinting. They work beautifully in stretch bracelets, multi-strand necklaces, and as accent beads between larger stones. Their larger holes also accept thicker stringing materials, including most stretch cords up to about 0.7 mm.
6/0 — Bold and Beginner-Friendly
The 4 mm 6/0 — sometimes called an "E bead" in older pattern books — is the workhorse of stretch bracelets and of first projects with supervised older children. Beads this size are still a choking hazard for children under three, so keep loose beads and finished pieces well away from toddlers. The generous hole swallows 1 mm stretch cord, doubled cord, leather lace, and heavier beading wire. 11/0 vs 8/0 Seed Beads: Which One?
This is the most common head-to-head, and the honest answer is that they solve different problems:
- Choose 11/0 for detail and drape. Woven pieces made from 11/0s feel like fabric — flexible, fine, and precise. Patterns render crisply because each bead is a small "pixel."
- Choose 8/0 for speed, visibility, and forgiveness. The same bracelet works up in a fraction of the time, the holes forgive an extra thread pass, and mistakes are easier to spot and fix.
- Learning a new stitch? Start in 8/0, then drop to 11/0 once the thread path makes sense. Your hands will thank you.
- Mixing them is a feature, not a compromise. Many designs alternate 8/0s and 11/0s deliberately — the size contrast creates texture that a single size can't.
One caution: an 8/0 is not simply "an 11/0, but bigger." Because hole size, wall thickness, and proportions all shift, a pattern written for one size will not automatically translate to the other without adjusting bead counts and thread choice.
Delica vs Round Seed Beads
"Delica" is Miyuki's brand name for its cylinder seed beads, and the cylinder-versus-round distinction matters as much as size does.
Round seed beads (sometimes called rocailles) are slightly donut-shaped, with softly rounded profiles. Woven together, they create a nubbly, organic texture with a bit of built-in flexibility.
Cylinder beads — Miyuki Delicas, plus comparable cylinder lines from Toho — are precision-made little tubes: uniform length, thin walls, flat ends, and comparatively large holes for their size. Woven edge-to-edge they lock together like bricks, producing a smooth, flat surface where the beadwork looks almost machine-made.
Practical guidance:
- For flat, pattern-driven work — especially peyote stitch — cylinders win. Charted designs, lettering, and geometric patterns align cleanly because every bead is the same length. - For stringing, fringe, netting, and organic texture, rounds win. They're also meaningfully cheaper per gram, which matters on large projects.
- Watch the sizing trap: an 11/0 Delica is noticeably smaller and slimmer than an 11/0 round — roughly 1.6 mm across versus about 2 mm. The two are not interchangeable in a pattern, even though they share a size number.
Delicas come in several sizes; 11/0 is by far the most common, with 15/0, 10/0, and 8/0 cylinders also made. Note that 10/0 appears in Miyuki's cylinder line but not in its round rocaille line, which runs 15/0, 11/0, 8/0, and 6/0 — a 10/0 round is a Czech size, so seeing "10/0" on a listing is a useful clue about what you're actually buying.
What Size Seed Beads for Bracelets?
For most bracelet styles, the answer narrows quickly:
- Stretch bracelets: 6/0 is the classic choice — its big hole handles 0.8–1 mm elastic cord easily. 8/0 works on thinner stretch cord (around 0.5–0.7 mm), giving a daintier look.

Japanese vs Czech: Why "Same Size" Isn't the Same
The /0 number is a convention, not a regulated standard, and manufacturers interpret it differently:
- Japanese rounds (Miyuki, Toho) are highly uniform, with relatively large holes for their size. They're typically sold by the gram in tubes and are the safe default for beadweaving, where consistency controls your tension.
- Czech rounds (notably Preciosa) tend to run slightly smaller and less uniform at the same nominal size, with a subtly flattened, donut-like profile. Traditionally sold on hanks, they excel in stringing, fringe, and vintage-style work, where slight variation reads as charm rather than error.
- The size ladders differ too. The Czech range fills in steps the Japanese round lines skip — a Czech 10/0 sits at roughly 2.3 mm, between the Japanese 11/0 and 8/0 — and extends into larger sizes such as 5/0.
