How do you check whether a seed bead finish will last?
Identify the maker, bead shape, size and exact color code, then read that product's durability information with its own legend. Match the warnings to the intended project, and keep a labeled sample before using the beads in a full design. A finish name alone does not establish permanent color, cleaning compatibility or skin suitability. Follow manufacturer handling guidance; do not improvise solvent tests or protective coatings.
This is a desk-researched guide to reading manufacturer information, checked on September 7, 2026. We have not performed wear, chemical or allergy tests. The sample-card exercise below is an original planning tool, not a product certification.
Keep loose beads and needles away from young children and pets. Work over a contained surface and store small samples securely. This exercise does not require wire cutting, adhesives or chemicals.
What information should stay with the beads?
Before separating beads from their packaging, record:
- Manufacturer and product line.
- Shape and nominal size.
- Complete color or item code, including suffixes.
- Supplier, purchase date and lot information if supplied.
- Finish description and the source of the durability information.
A color description helps you recognize the beads; the exact identifier helps you find the correct documentation. Do not assign an unidentified leftover a manufacturer's rating because it looks similar to a named color.
Shape and size still matter independently of finish. Use the seed bead size guide for that part of the selection, then keep your color-durability record alongside it.
What do finish descriptions actually tell you?
MIYUKI's Japanese guide separates glass types from processing applied to the surface or inside the hole. A bead can have more than one treatment. These distinctions describe appearance and construction, not a universal ranking of durability.

MIYUKI describes these categories in its glass and finish reference, in Japanese. Check the particular product rather than transferring one category's properties to every similarly named bead.
For design work, make appearance a separate question: can the thread be seen, do neighboring colors remain distinct, and does the surface reflect light as intended? A finish can suit the palette while still carrying a handling limitation.
How do you read MIYUKI's current numbered durability guide?
The Japanese Delica durability page uses separate columns for change from ultraviolet exposure or time, color loss from sweat or friction, and color loss from dry-cleaning. Its numerical legend runs in this direction:

These are manufacturer reference assessments, not years of service, test-cycle counts or medical ratings. MIYUKI says actual conditions can produce different results.
Read across all relevant columns. A favorable light-related rating does not answer the friction question. For bead embroidery on clothing, a dry-cleaning entry is relevant information to discuss with the garment's care provider; it is not permission to clean the entire garment that way.
On the page we accessed, the legend was readable but the individual color table remained in a loading state. We therefore do not assign a numbered rating to any specific color here. If your lookup also fails, ask the supplier or manufacturer for the exact current entry.
Why do some English charts show A, B, C and symbols instead?
MIYUKI's still-accessible English durability guide uses a different presentation:
- A: change or fading associated with bright sun or time.
- B: color rubbing off through friction or skin-acid contact.
- C: alteration or fading from dry-cleaning.
Within that guide, 0 means no problem in usual use, - flags possible problems depending on use or environment, and X indicates limited durability requiring attention.
Read the legend printed with the data you are actually using. Do not convert an English 0 into a numbered 1, or assume every seller's symbol system follows either page. Keep the source and date with copied ratings.
Suppose a fictional sample record using that English legend reads A: 0, B: -, C: X. It does not say “excellent overall.” It leaves a use-dependent rubbing concern and a dry-cleaning concern. The example illustrates reading separate fields; it is not a rating for a real product.
If two sources disagree about a color, retain both records and ask for clarification. Do not average ratings or choose whichever interpretation makes the purchase easier.
Are Duracoat and PermaFinish permanent?
MIYUKI describes Duracoat as a protective clear coating for outside-dyed or galvanized beads, thicker and stronger than its traditional coating. That is the manufacturer's comparison, not our test result. MIYUKI Duracoat description
The Japanese finish guide explicitly cautions that improved durability does not eliminate color peeling or loss. The name is not an unlimited wear guarantee. MIYUKI finish precautions
TOHO likewise says its PermaFinish improves resistance to discoloration and fading compared with beads without that finish, while warning that color can come off with strong impact, continuous friction or organic solvents, including those in perfume. TOHO PermaFinish guidance
Treat these as different manufacturers' systems. Neither statement provides a valid head-to-head ranking, a guaranteed lifespan or proof that an unspecified bead is suitable for every use.
How can you make a useful sample card?
Keep an identification sample before a large project. For an original planning exercise, choose three candidate colors in the same intended shape and size. For each, arrange a short sample with light thread and another with dark thread, using a method you already know.
If you allocate 20 beads to each sample, the arithmetic is:
3 colors × 2 thread choices × 20 beads = 120 beads
That is 40 beads per color and six samples altogether. These quantities are convenient editorial choices, not a manufacturer's testing protocol or a claim about finished dimensions.
Label each sample with the full identifier and thread choice. Look at it beside the other planned materials in ordinary project lighting. Record only what you observe: “dark thread visible through this sample” is useful; “will stay colorfast for years” is not established by looking.
For a woven sample, follow a familiar flat peyote technique rather than inventing a new thread path while comparing colors. Choose compatible needle and thread sizes, and do not force a needle through a crowded bead.
Attach or store samples so beads cannot escape into shared spaces. A closed compartment labeled to match a paper record works without coating or gluing the beads.
What should you avoid doing to test or improve durability?
Do not soak samples in household solvents, spray them with perfume, bleach them, sand their coatings or apply nail polish to “seal” them. Those are not part of this exercise. They do not establish safe wear or a guaranteed repair.
TOHO's solvent and friction warnings are reasons to avoid incompatible exposure, not instructions to reproduce destructive testing at home. For cleaning, get instructions compatible with the complete item, including thread, findings, fabric and adhesives where present. Do not assume a cleaner accepted by one component is accepted by all the others.
How does the record change your design decision?
Before committing, write one sentence describing the intended use: a decorative sample, a frequently handled bracelet, or embroidery on a garment with specified care requirements. Then compare that use with the documentation you found.
Our editorial approach is to pause when a relevant durability condition is unresolved. Ask a specific question: “What handling and cleaning instructions apply to this complete color code for this project?” If the answer remains unknown, choose a documented alternative or change the project rather than promise durability you cannot establish.
Keep three fields distinct on the finished record: manufacturer information, your sample observations, and your design decision. A successful visual sample belongs in the second field, not the first.
When making a beaded bracelet, finish choice is only one material decision; fit, stringing material and closure still need their own checks. Keep the sample and care information with your project notes so future repairs start with an identifiable bead.
